Presentation Title

Making RMAN Perform

Abstract

RMAN is a well-established backup tool. As it has become increasingly robust, it has also become increasingly complex.

When RMAN doesn't seem to be performing as well as you think it should, where do you begin to tune it? While there is some RMAN tuning information available to guide you, it is somewhat sparse.

This presentation is not going to offer any quick tips or silver bullets, because there aren't any.

This presentation is about learning how to determine what makes RMAN perform well in a particular environment, and what makes it perform poorly.

You will see what parameters performed well in my test system, but there are no guarantees that you would see the same results in your systems by applying the same values to these parameters.

Topics for this presentation include:

  • Increasing backup performance

  • Increasing restore performance

  • Compromises between backup and restore performance

  • Compromising backup performance to maintain response time
