Hotsos Symposium Speaker – Robyn Sands
Ms. Sands is a new Hotsos Symposium presenter.
Biography
Robyn is a System Design Architect at Cisco Systems, Customer Advocacy. In a previous incarnation, she was an Industrial/System Engineer at Lockheed Martin and supported the P-7, F-22 and C-130J programs. Robyn has been working with Oracle since 1995, beginning by developing tools for scheduling, data analysis and composite fabrication capacity modeling, and later progressing to the implementation and administration of large ERP systems. Current projects involve designing and supporting data management solutions for products used by Cisco customers.
Presentation Title
An Industrial Engineer's Approach to Oracle Management and Performance
Abstract
As a former Industrial Engineer, Ms. Sands has found that many of the best database management practices have much in common with the disciplines of Industrial and Quality Engineering. In the manufacturing world, products designed with complex processes and inconsistent parts are difficult, and therefore expensive, to produce. Designing for manufacturability results in better quality at a lower cost. Similarly, database systems designed for manageability can be supported with better performance and less effort.
An overview of several Industrial and Quality Engineering concepts will be presented including: time studies, component interchangeability, value engineering, statistical process control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DoE). She will discuss variation and why variation should be minimized where practical. She will also explore potential uses of variation as a tool to identify performance issues.
