#2: Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting: No Magic Is Needed, Systematic Approach Will Do

Abstract

  • #1 Oracle Trending and Charting Using Sesspack & Excel: This presentation introduces you to a new free tool which is likely to make your performance tuning and capacity planning life easier - the Sesspack.

This is especially useful if you do not have Oracle Diagnostics pack licenses or want additional flexibility in gathering and analyzing your performance data.

Sesspack allows you to flexibly gather and store session level Oracle execution statistics - just like a session-level Statspack. The author has successfully used it in numerous performance troubleshooting and capacity planning cases in database systems with diverse workload.

The performance data can be analyzed using and automated Excel spreadsheet - the Sesspack Dashboard. It fetches the Sesspack, Statspack or any other data directly from database and displays it to you any way you want. The detail of Sesspack data combined with Excel's powerful data handling and pivot-charting capabilities may make you to forget your existing performance charting tools.

  • #2 Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting: No Magic Is Needed, Systematic Approach Will Do: This presentation gives you the knowledge of how to dig deeper from usual performance troubleshooting approaches like tracing and Oracle Wait Interface sampling. These classic techniques are often not adequate for diagnosing special cases involving bugs, Oracle instrumentation deficiencies and operating system issues.

We will look into techniques, scripts and tools for sampling relevant execution statistics from inside and outside Oracle. We also use a simple non-intrusive stack profiling method for pinpointing where exactly in Oracle kernel the response time is spent.

This all is wrapped into a practical troubleshooting method which has so far helped Mr. Põder to accurately troubleshoot many issues related.
