Biography

Tapio Lahdenmäki has worked with performance management since 1975 in Finland and in many other countries. He has been a performance consultant in numerous large database application projects. After a long career in IBM, he is an independent consultant since 2003. His latest book – co-authored with Mike Leach – is Relational Database Index Design and the Optimizers, Wiley, 2005.

Abstract

  • #1 and #2 Rethink Your Indexes: Inadequate indexing, often based on obsolete recommendation, is the most common reason for poor application performance. This presentation introduces a well-proven methodology for deriving the optimal indexes for a given SELECT with given filter factors. It is based on Quick Upper-Bound Estimates (QUBE) and four relevant index candidates: Minimal-Cost Semifat, Ideal Semifat, Minimal-Cost Fat, and Ideal Fat.
