Hotsos Symposium Speaker – Jerry Brenner
Mr. Brenner is a new Hotsos Symposium presenter.
Biography
Jerry Brenner spent the first part of his career working on database internals, primarily on query processing and optimization. While at Sybase, he was the technical lead for the project that rewrote subquery processing to fix performance and correctness problems, so that Peoplesoft could release on top of Sybase. He was also an original member of the query processing team at Cloudscape. He has been the database lead at Guidewire, the leading provider of solutions for property and casualty insurance companies, for the past 4.5 years.
Presentation Title
Mining the AWR and ASH Tables to Improve Application Performance and Quality
Abstract
There is a wealth of information in the AWR and ASH tables that does not appear in the reports supplied by Oracle. Over the years, we have developed an internal tool to mine the tables for additional information that has helped us to improve the performance and the quality of our applications prior to their release. We've been able to incorporate this tool into our applications, so that it is also available in production, and integrate it with our performance test harness so that the information is saved off with every performance test.
By setting the module and action in our applications, we can use our tools to get extensive information about the database resource usage of the parsing (AWR) and executing (ASH) actions in the app server. Not only does this make it easier for the database team to work with the application teams, it allows the application teams to play more of a role in reducing the impact of their applications on the database.
This presentation will go over:
- Information in the AWR and ASH tables that is not in the reports and queries for retrieving that information.
- How we've used our understanding of our applications to increase the value of the information.
