Hotsos Symposium Speaker – Wolfgang Breitling
Mr. Breitling is a prior Hotsos Symposium presenter.
Biography
Wolfgang Breitling was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied mathematics, physics and computer sciences at the University of Stuttgart. Following several years as systems programmer for IMS and later DB2 databases on IBM mainframes, he got on the project to implement Peoplesoft on Oracle. In 1996, he became an independent consultant specializing in administering and tuning Peoplesoft on Oracle. The particular challenges in tuning Peoplesoft, with often no access to the SQL, motivated him to explore Oracle's cost-based optimizer in an effort to better understand how it works and use that knowledge in tuning. He has shared the findings from this research in papers and presentations at IOUG, UKOUG, local Oracle user groups, and other conferences and newsgroups dedicated to Oracle performance topics.
Presentation Title
Active Statistics
Abstract
The presentation will demonstrate techniques to use statistics, both object and system statistics, as an active tool in performance tuning. It will show what can be done with statistics other than simply gathering them. The presentation, however, will also look at statistics gathering:
- The effect of different parameter settings, e.g. method_opt, estimate_percent or cascade, on the performance of gathering and the accuracy of the gathered object statistics
- The difference in the effect of the "stattab parameters" between gather_object_stats and gather_system_stats
- How to "safely" gather and prepare system statistics
The presentation will then cover how to actively use statistics:
- Issues and solutions related to using export_xxx_stats/import_xxx_stats in order to copy statistics to another partition, schema or database
- Another way of copying statistics besides export/import
- Examples of how to use the prepare_column_values procedure to create your own column statistics
- When and how to use generate_stats
