Presentation Title

Successful Performance Testing and Benchmarking Practices

Abstract

Performance testing and benchmarking is one of the most widely misunderstood practices and efforts a DBA will undertake. At PayPal, Kyle has successfully established working benchmarking practices which correctly quantify the gains/losses of a new database infrastructure, simulate realistic workload patterns without risking restricted data being moved into a lab environment, require minimal investment to create new benchmarks and rapidly reproduce issues/bugs that affect the live site in a lab environment thereby allowing Oracle, IBM and other vendors to get good RCA on some cases of extremely complex interoperability issues that would not be possible to reproduce anywhere else. This presentation will be about sharing PayPal's practices and experiences as well as the what, how and why of performance testing and benchmarking.
