Biography

Riyaj ShamsudeenRiyaj Shamsudeen has 18+ years of experience in Oracle and 17+ years as an Oracle DBA/Oracle Applications DBA. He is the principal DBA for OraInternals, a consulting company resolving many advanced performance, recovery, RAC, and EBS11i issues. Riyaj specializes in RAC and performance issues and has authored many articles, mostly about performance, database internals, optimizer internals, etc.

Mr. Shamsudeen is a frequent presenter in major conferences such as Hotsos Symposia, UKOUG, RMOUG etc. He is also a proud member of OakTable network, and he blogs regularly at http://orainternals.wordpress.com.

Riyaj is an Oracle Ace, and he has co-authored two books with esteemed colleagues.

Truss, pstack, pmap, and More

Abstract

Effective use of advanced UNIX utilities is important to scientifically troubleshoot performance and hang issues. Riyaj will demo a few "application hung" scenarios and use UNIX utilities such as pstack, truss to understand the root cause of the problem. We will also explore methods to identify the process memory usage using pmap and other PGA statistics.

Most of these tools are available in all major flavors of UNIX. Demos will be in Solaris platform and discussion of related tools in Linux will be discussed.
