Biography

Robyn SandsRobyn Sands is a database performance engineer on the Real World Performance team at Oracle. Obsessions include variance, patterns in performance and repeatable system architecture. Favorite distractions include pushing limits and trying to understand why software people do the things they do.

Robyn has been working with Oracle software as a database administrator and developer since 1995. Prior experience includes developing database tools for scheduling, data analysis and capacity modeling, implementation and administration of SAP and PeopleSoft systems, and designing and building embedded software products. Robyn is a member of the Oak Table network and a co-author of three books: Expert Oracle Practices: Oracle Database Administration from the Oak Table, Pro Oracle SQL and Expert PL/SQL Practices for Oracle Developers and DBAs.

Presentation Title

Year of Living Dangerously Fast: Lessons in Real World Performance

Abstract

Once upon a time, there was a database geek who believed in simple solutions, root causes, consistently fast response time and a bug free software. After years of predictable database systems, and a predictable sleep schedule, it was time for the protagonist of our story to take off her rose colored glasses and join the "Real World", a place where data is vast, bugs bite and applications are carved in stone. A place where, in spite of these villainous obstacles, root cause must still be found, systems must remain stable and response time must be measured in microseconds.

In this session, Robyn will share what she's learned after (almost) one year on Oracle's Real World Performance team, the previous lessons that had to be left behind, and a few key hypotheses that have proven true time and time again. Attendees will learn how to optimize system performance in the presence of Real World bad guys, pitfalls and brier patches. Most importantly, attendees will learn what NOT to do in their pursuit of "happily ever after" and why consistent performance is the only kind that counts.
