Hotsos Symposium Speaker – Henry Poras

Henry Poras is a returning Hotsos Symposium presenter.

Biography

Henry PorasHenry Poras has been an Oracle DBA for over ten years, working with custom applications as well as off-the-shelf products. He is currently developing an airline reservation system, which has strict HA and performance demands. The performance and load testing structure provides a convenient environment in which to develop innovative techniques for better understanding the hardware and tuning needs of the application.

Henry has been a speaker at the New England Oracle Users Group (NOUG) and previous Hotsos Symposia.

Presentation Title

Determining Resource Utilization and Saturation Limits in a Multi-User, Mixed Workload Environment

Abstract

We will continue our examination of resource utilization and saturation limits by extending the granularity of our investigation to the user level. We begin by reviewing our abiility to query AWR tables to determine resource limits at a systemwide level. We will then start breaking this down for multi-user systems with mixed workloads. We will investigate bottlenecks and capacity limits for individual users and user-types. We will also show how far we can go in making performance and saturation predictions as the workload mix changes. Our load test environment provides a useful test bed to collect this data, but the techniques can also be generalized to production systems. This analysis is applied to a multi-tiered RAC system. All scripts used for this analysis will be made available as part of the presentation.
