He is one of the first Oracle Certified Masters in the world, passing the OCM DBA exam in 2002; he is also an Oracle ACE Director and a proud member of the OakTable Network.

In addition to delivering his seminars and conference presentations worldwide, Tanel also publishes his work at his Oracle performance blog: http://blog.tanelpoder.com.

Topic

The topic for Training Day 2010 is: Scripts and Tools for Oracle Troubleshooting and Advanced Performance Analysis

The aim of this training day is to make your everyday Oracle troubleshooting and performance analysis work easier, by providing you the right tools for the right problems.

We not only need to optimize databases and SQL statements, but also our own time. Using the right tools frees up time for doing more proactive work (and for some vacation)!

During the day, Tanel will show you the main scripts and tools he constantly uses in his everyday work. Those who have already seen Tanel's work know that he doesn't like to waste time, hence the tools which allow you to troubleshoot and analyze performance accurately and fast.

Of course a systematic approach for diagnosing different types of performance problems will be shown and used throughout all the demos.

The training day content will be roughly split into two focus areas:

  • How to collect and use relevant performance data
  • Advanced Oracle performance analysis

The first part will address the problem of information overload in classic performance tools, and focuses on the important performance data only.

Major updates to Tanel's performance tools will be published, for example:

  • Snapper v3.0, with built-in ASH style session activity sampling and yes, Snapper still does not require any changes to be made to the database!
  • LatchProf v2.0, which also identifies problem SQL in addition to sessions and Oracle kernel functions and allows you to capture latch holder data over long periods of time.

The second part will introduce you to tools for graphically viewing performance data not just from a few pre-determined angles (like most performance tools out there do), but in any way you want to view it. You can slice and dice the performance data, perform trend and variation analysis, and outlier detection for proactively detecting potential problem queries and infrastructure issues.

You will be the first to see the version 3.0 of Tanel's PerfSheet Excel-based performance tool, which features performance analysis workflows and advanced analytics. Anyone who does not use Excel can still use most of the SQL queries in it for extracting performance information.

In addition to all of the above items, Tanel will show one more performance tool which is currently in a secret project status. ;-)

All the scripts and tools will be downloadable for free from Tanel's blog.

Training Day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:45 p.m.
