Topic

The topic for Training Day 2009 is entitled "Understanding Trouble-Shooting".Jonathan Lewis

Identifying performance problems in an Oracle database is not very difficult — if you have the right approach.

In this tutorial, we learn about trouble-shooting by going back to the basics, and building from there to a strategy that minimizes the time we spend finding the problems that matter.

We start by identifying the key features of a performant system. This helps us to recognise what's missing from a system that is performing badly, and allows us to decide on the most cost-effective improvements that we can risk making. We then review the information that Oracle makes available to us to identify real-time problems, and the three main ways we can access that information to address particular classes of problem.

At the end of this day you will be able to pick the best approach to identifying the most important flaws in a system, and identify the best tactical and strategic fixes for those problems.
