Hotsos Symposium 2008 Speaker – Gerwin Hendriksen
Mr. Hendriksen is a new Hotsos Symposium presenter.
Biography
Gerwin Hendriksen has been working with Oracle technologies for ten years. He started work as a DBA at a consulting company in the Netherlands. After this, he worked for five years for Oracle in the role of Advanced Resolution Engineer. In this role, he has specialized in performance and high availability for the Oracle database and Oracle E-Business Suite. In his time at Oracle, he gave several training classes in different countries.
Later Mr. Hendriksen joined IBM, and worked there for two years. At IBM, he worked as a Technical Consultant for several projects in different countries. He also gave training classes in the IBM JSC in Montpellier, and at several customer sites. Currently, he is working for AMIS Services BV in the Netherlands, where he is working as a Technical Consultant. At Amis, he has given several presentations about Oracle database performance and Oracle E-Business Suite performance. He has also given a presentation for the OGH (Oracle User Group Holland) about Oracle database performance in March, 2007.
Presentation Title
How System Metrics Can Help You Find Performance Bottlenecks for Business Processes in Complex Architectures
Abstract
The presentation will demonstrate how business processes, from front-end to back-end can be profiled on high level, by usage of system metrics like CPU and I/O over certain time. The entire presentation is based on actual customer data, where this way of profiling was used successfully. Profiling was used to pinpoint the performance bottlenecks of the system, report them to management, and advise the customer about performance improvements.
The idea of using only simple measurable metrics, like CPU and I/O, was born from the fact that no intervening of the business processes was allowed by the customer (no tracing, no test system). The question was how to find the performance bottlenecks in a complex architecture and prove how much they impacted the business processes.
The whole idea makes it possible to get a high level profiling of a business process without actually changing anything in the business process code, or starting any tracing. Just by the use of simple system metrics (nmon), a regression analysis can be done. This analysis was used to create a model describing the real found response times of the business processes. By using this model, it became clear where in the architecture, certain wait time had been spent, and in that way to pinpoint what to improve in the architecture. In this presentation, it will be made clear how this can be done in an easy way.
After finding out in which pieces of the architecture the time for a certain business process was spent (under certain circumstances), it will in some cases still be necessary to further drill down in that piece of the architecture. Although this is sometimes the case, the analyses will make it clear where the performance enhancement effort should be focused.
