Title: Testing Oracle Performance
Author: Cary Millsap
Get File:
Abstract: When I was little, my parents taught me not to believe everything I hear or read. In the world of Oracle performance, there’s often a mind-boggling gap between the truth and the advice that professionals say and write. One reason this gap exists is that many of the professionals rendering poor advice lack some combination of the will and the skill to confirm or refute the hypotheses they’re selling. In this paper, I attempt to motivate the audience to become more actively skeptical about the advice they hear and read. I provide a framework with some examples that I hope will encourage people to figure out better for themselves which advice to believe and which to discard. This IOUG Live 2004 presentation describes the motivations, attitudes, and mechanics of testing conjectures about Oracle performance. The zipfile also includes four demonstration tests.
